Using a computer-How to keep safe

Taking all the following actions may not prevent an abuser from discovering your internet activity. The safest way to find information is to use a computer away from the home, such as a local library, friend's house or your workplace. It is suggested that you change your password frequently and always use a combination of words, symbols (*^"!<>~ etc) and numbers. Never use social media where others can "follow you" as it is an open forum and anyone can see you are looking for support or information.

Email:

If an abuser has access to your email account, he or she may be able to view your incoming and outgoing mail. If you believe your account is secure, make sure you choose a password he or she will not be able to guess. If an abuser sends you threatening or harassing email messages, they may be printed and used as evidence of this abuse.

Internet history:

An abuser may know how to view the websites you have visited. To prevent this happening, click the link to Computer Hope for step-by-step instruction on how to clear your internet browser history.
