Black Lives Matter: Short Statement

"It’s up to all of us — Black, white, everyone — no matter how well-meaning we think we might be, to do the honest, uncomfortable work of rooting it out.”

Michelle Obama, on racism

BLM SHORT STATEMENT

WATFORD WOMEN’S CENTRE STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT AND ALL THOSE WHO SEEK TO ERADICATE INJUSTICE ACROSS THE GLOBE. WE RECOGNISE THE DEVASTATING IMPACT OF STRUCTURAL RACISM ON LIFE CHANCES ACROSS HEALTH, EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT AND THE JUSTICE SYSTEM.

WATFORD WOMEN’S CENTRE WILL ALWAYS CONSIDER ISSUES OF INTERSECTIONALITY IN OUR APPROACH TO EQUALITY AND FEMINISM AND ARE COMMITTED TO AMPLIFYING THE VOICES OF BLACK WOMEN IN THE WORK THAT WE DO.

OUR COMMITMENT

Examine our privilege

  • We will review our policies and recruitment practices to ensure more diversity in our leadership and management

Promote the rights of marginalised women

  • We will always take an intersectional approach to women's rights and promote an understanding of this approach throughout our organisation

Listen and Learn

  • We will work directly with diverse women and meaningfully engage black women in service development and implementation

Support and empower

  • We will amplify the voices of marginalised women by facilitating safe spaces where they can feel empowered to speak freely

We will be posting a series of talks/podcasts and articles on Black Lives Matter. Please join us in the movement.
